You can put in new cabinets, new floors, and fresh paint, and the room can still feel flat if the lighting is wrong. One dim fixture in the middle of the ceiling casting shadows into every corner is how a lot of Austin homes were built, and it is the thing people feel without being able to name it.
Cornerstone is a family owned remodeling company in Austin, and we handle lighting as part of the remodels we take on. Recessed lighting, under cabinet lighting, pendants, fixtures, and the dimmers and switches that let you actually control the room, all installed by licensed professionals and built into the project.
This page covers lighting as part of a larger remodel rather than a one-off service call. If you are redoing a kitchen, a bathroom, an addition, or a whole home and you want the lighting done right while the ceilings and walls are open, that is exactly the work we are talking about.
Our remodels include the lighting scope that fits the space and the way you live in it. Depending on your project, that can include:
Also called can lights or pot lights. Clean, even ceiling coverage without a fixture hanging down, and the workhorse of most modern lighting plans. We install fire-rated and IC-rated housings where the ceiling requires them, and we lay them out for balanced coverage rather than guessing at spacing.
LED strips and puck lights beneath kitchen cabinets, hardwired for a clean, cord-free look. This is the task lighting that makes a counter usable and a kitchen feel high-end, and it is a standard part of our kitchen remodels.
Pendants over an island or breakfast bar, sized and hung at the right height so they light the surface without blocking sightlines. As much a design decision as a lighting one, which is where Julie comes in.
Proper lighting at the mirror where you actually need it, plus recessed and shower lighting. Part of nearly every bathroom remodel we do.
Dining rooms, entryways, and stairwells. Heavier fixtures need proper support and the right box, which matters more than people realize when a fixture is hanging over a table.
Wall sconces, flush mounts, track lighting, and fixture swaps throughout the rooms we are remodeling.
Dimmer switches and smart lighting controls so one room can go from bright and functional to low and relaxed. We make sure the dimmers are compatible with the fixtures so nothing buzzes or flickers, which is a common complaint from jobs done without that check.
Switching older recessed cans and fixtures to energy-efficient LED as part of a remodel. LED cuts lighting energy use substantially and lasts far longer, so it pays for itself over time.
Before anything goes in, we plan fixture types, placement, and switch locations around how you use each room. Julie's interior design background means the plan considers how the light looks, not just how much of it there is.
The reason a professionally lit room feels better than a builder-grade one is not brightness. It is layers. Most rooms need three kinds of light working together, and a remodel is the moment to build all three in.
A single ceiling fixture gives you one layer and calls it a day. When we plan lighting for a remodel, we look at how you actually use the room and build the layers around it.
We are Joe and Julie Davila, and Cornerstone is our family business. Joe was born and raised in Austin and runs the construction side, on site and hands on. Julie handles the design side, and lighting is one of the places that the design eye makes the biggest difference in how a finished room feels.
Every project is managed by our in-house team from planning through completion. Whether your remodel is one room or the whole house, you will always have one point of contact.

Homeowners sometimes plan to add lighting later, once the room is done. Almost always, that costs more and delivers less. Here is why doing it during the remodel is the right call.
Lighting is one line in a larger remodel budget, and what it adds depends on the plan. The main factors:
Because it is part of a larger project, we scope the lighting alongside everything else and give you a clear breakdown before work begins. Doing it during the remodel, while ceilings and walls are open and one crew is already on site, is exactly why it costs less this way than as a standalone job later.

Our lighting work is done as part of the remodeling projects we take on, such as kitchens, bathrooms, additions, and whole home renovations. Folding it into the larger project is what lets us plan the layout properly and manage the wiring under one team.
Yes. Lighting installation is electrical work, which Texas regulates and requires proper licensing for. Ours is handled by licensed professionals, done to code, and it passes City of Austin inspection.
It depends on the size of the room, the ceiling height, and what else is lighting the space. Rather than following a rigid formula, we plan the layout for even coverage and the way you use the room, then balance it with task and accent lighting so it does not feel like a flat grid of cans.
Using more than one type of light in a room: ambient for overall fill, task for where you work, and accent to add depth. It is the main reason a professionally lit room feels better than one with a single ceiling fixture, and a remodel is the ideal time to build all three layers in.
In almost every case, yes. LED uses far less energy than older bulbs, lasts much longer, and modern LED lighting has excellent color and dimming quality. We install LED as standard and can upgrade existing fixtures to LED as part of a remodel.
Usually because the dimmer and the bulbs are not compatible, which is common when lighting is done without checking that. When we install dimmers we match them to the fixtures so the lights dim smoothly and quietly across the full range.
Yes, and it is one of the highest-impact additions in a kitchen remodel. Hardwired LED strips or puck lights under the cabinets give you glare-free task lighting over the counters and make the whole kitchen feel finished.
New lighting and the wiring behind it generally require a permit and inspection in Austin. Simple fixture swaps sometimes do not. We handle the permitting and inspections as part of your project.
We do. Every estimate is free with no obligation, and if we do not need to visit first, you can often expect one within 24 hours.
